Frequently Asked Questions

Who lives at the Cape Elizabeth Home?

Men and women aged seventy and above, who are independent enough to care for their own personal needs; those not requiring "assisted living" or on-site medical services.

What if I need help with medication or personal care?

Although we cannot dispense medication, we do help residents who may need "reminders." Further, for those who need help with personal care, we encourage the use of outside help - home care agencies such as OneCall, Living Innovations, and others - to enable residents to remain "at home" with us as long as possible.

What does it cost to live at the Home?

The charge of $1180 per month covers meals, laundry, housekeeping (included weekly changing of bed linens), and all activities. The resident pays only for his/her personal telephone and cable, and for hairdresser visits. The third floor suite is $1475 per month, or $1800 for a couple occupying the suite.

May I furnish my own room?

Yes, residents bring their own furniture and bed linens with them and are free to decorate as they choose.

Will I have my own private bathroom?

Of the nine bedrooms, two have full private bathrooms; five have private half-baths, with shower facilities nearby; and two of the rooms share one full bathroom. The third floor suite has its own bathroom.

Will I feel confined, living in one room?

No. The Home was built to be just that - a home, replete with places to relax, entertain company, take a stroll, or pay a visit. In addition to the spacious living room, you'll find a library nook, cozy dining room, sundeck, and a broad, old-fashioned front porch that's just right for sitting and watching activities on busy Ocean Street. In summer, enjoy the patio and garden area.

Will I feel completely secure at the Home?

Yes. We're staffed 24 hours per day, so you're never far from help; there are emergency pull cords in each bedroom; and we have an extensive alarm and sprinkler system throughout the building.

What about the meals?

Our meals are excellent. Breakfast offers a range of choices: hot or cold cereal, eggs, fruit, toast and homemade muffins. Dinner, served at noon, is prepared by our professional chef, and runs the gamut from gourmet delights to downhome comfort fare. The light supper, served at five, might be sandwiches, soup, salads, cold cuts and cheeses, or other homestyle favorites. For those who enjoy between meal snacks, there is a sideboard of treats (crackers, fruit, candy) in the dining room, and staff members are always glad to supply something from the kitchen. In addition, there are small refrigerators on each floor for residents who wish to store cold drinks and other items.
